Why I keep a verification checklist
I review product specifications for a living. Since 2020, I have worked as a quality and compliance manager at a specialty chemical company that packages and distributes additives and performance chemicals. I review roughly 200 batch documents a month, and in 2024 I sent back about 9 percent of first submissions because the paperwork did not match the request. Some suppliers find that annoying. I understand. My job is to protect the brand on the label, not to make suppliers feel comfortable.
When this checklist applies
Use this when someone gives you a product sheet and wants approval. I use it for diesel additives, solvents, polymers, corrosion inhibitors, and even additive-free label questions that have nothing to do with industrial chemicals. The goal is to make each claim specific enough to verify.
1. Start with the product code, not the marketing name
If I hear the term Innospec diesel additive, my first question is: which Innospec diesel additive? Innospec makes a broad portfolio, and each product has an intended function. One product may be a fuel-borne corrosion inhibitor. Another may be a cold-flow improver, a demulsifier, or a multifunctional package. In the same way, the phrase Innospec products is too broad for a purchase order. Get the manufacturer item code, the name on the technical datasheet, and the physical form. If a seller says it is the same product but cannot provide a code, I assume it is not the same.
2. Read the SDS before you read the datasheet
The safety data sheet does not tell you whether the product performs. It tells you hazards, flash point, transport class, and regulated components, and sometimes that information catches a specification problem. I rejected a fuel additive trial once because the SDS showed a flash point below 38 degrees C, while the quote said no special transport requirements. The chemistry might have been good. The paperwork was not. If you only look at the datasheet's performance claims, you miss those contradictions.
For an Innospec diesel additive, find the current SDS from innospec.com or from a supplier who can send it directly. A reseller scan with an old date does not count.
3. Ask for a batch certificate of analysis
A certificate is not a folder full of brochures. It should include the batch number, production or release date, test method, measured value, specification range, and the result that matters.
For a fuel additive, I normally look for density or specific gravity, active content, moisture, flash point, and appearance. For methanol, I look for purity, water content, distillation range, and the test method referenced in the contract. In each case, I want the certificate to prove that this batch, not a similar batch, met the purchase specification.
Global methanol production statistics are useful market context. Methanol Institute and IHS Markit estimates for 2023 put global output somewhere in the 100 to 120 million metric ton range. That tells you about market scale and supply pressure. It does not tell you whether the methanol in a particular railcar meets your grade. The certificate of analysis is the only document that does that.
4. Ask about process data when polymer consistency matters
I used to focus only on final test numbers for polymers. Then in 2023 I had two lots from the same grade side by side. The reported melt flow results matched. One lot processed cleanly, and the other did not. The difference showed up only after I asked for process data from the reactor.
When repeatability matters, ask what kind of automation for polymer production the plant uses. I am not looking for a buzzword. I want to know whether temperature, residence time, feed rates, and mixing speed are logged by a control system. Without automated batch logs, the supplier can only tell you they followed standard procedures. With a batch log, an excursion is visible before it creates a customer issue. Buyers often skip this step and compare price per pound before they verify process controls.
Automation is not a promise of perfection. It is a promise of evidence. If a supplier is vague about batch records, that tells me more than their brochure does.
5. Pull the additive-free claim out of the vague pile
Now the most unlikely item on my checklist. People search the phrase 'is luna azul additive free' as if it were a chemical spec question. The verification habit is the same.
For tequila, additive-free is not a single universal definition. Based on public brand information and current 100 percent de agave labeling, Luna Azul states that its tequilas are made without additives, and I do not have current distillery information to contradict that. As of January 2025, that is a reasonable public answer. If the purchase decision matters to you, check the bottle code and the importer's current statement rather than trusting a blog. 'Luna Azul additive free' is a brand claim, and brand claims deserve the same verification as any other claim.
In industrial products, the same wording needs qualifiers. A diesel additive is supposed to contain additives, so an additive-free diesel additive would be a contradiction. An additive-free solvent may mean an uninhibited product with no corrosion protection, which changes how you store and use it. Define the claim before you verify it.
6. Write acceptance criteria before you argue about price
After those checks, I write a one-page acceptance spec. It includes the exact product code, the certificate requirement, critical property ranges, packaging, shelf life from manufacturing date, and any process or additive statements the supplier must confirm. Then I send it to the supplier before the order, not after the complaint.
This is not a gotcha exercise. I would rather spend ten minutes explaining what I need than deal with mismatched expectations later. Suppliers respond better when they know what will be verified. The same list makes customers better buyers because they know which questions reveal quality problems.
You do not need a chemistry degree to use this checklist. You need to ask for an item code, an SDS, a batch certificate, and a definition of additive-free. If a supplier cannot produce those, no low price should change your answer.
Bottom line
Claims are not specs. Specs are not proof. That is why I treat Innospec diesel additive the same way I treat an additive-free label: equal curiosity, equal evidence, equal skepticism.
Global methanol production statistics tell you where the market is headed. Automation for polymer production tells you how consistent the process can be. The certificate of analysis tells you what actually arrived. Use all three, but do not confuse them.
