What I Learned Buying an Oil Additive to Stop Leaks: Innospec Company Overview, SDS Codes, and Additive Colors

An office buyer searches for an oil additive to stop leaks and ends up researching an Innospec company overview, chemical industry documentation, acetone SDS H225/H319/H336, and additive colors.

It started as a sticky note on my keyboard: UV dye kit first. Then we can talk about an oil additive to stop leaks. Sam.

Sam leads maintenance for the 60-person industrial services company where I work. I have handled our office purchasing since 2020. That comes to roughly 60-80 orders a year across about eight vendors. Maybe it was fewer in 2024 because of our vendor consolidation project; I would have to check the system. My point is not that I am an expert chemist. I am not. I am the person who makes sure the invoice, the SDS, and the product actually match before money changes hands.

Sam is not someone who asks for products without a reason. The reason this time was an aging forklift. A small oil leak was weeping from a seal. His exact description was: I might need an oil additive to stop leaks, but first I need to see where the leak is actually coming from.

So before ordering anything, Sam asked me to buy a UV leak-detection dye kit. He wanted to find the source of the leak first. That is a lot smarter than pouring a can of stop-leak into a machine and hoping. It also meant I spent an entire Tuesday afternoon researching chemical suppliers.

That does not make every product using their chemistry safe. It means I am not buying from a mystery bottle with a shipping label.

What I needed to know about Innospec chemicals

I did not need to memorize the full Innospec chemicals portfolio. I needed to know whether the company was a manufacturer, a formulator, or a middleman. The website made clear it is a specialty chemical manufacturer. That is a different level of responsibility than a broker who just moves drums around.

The bigger lesson for me was this: if a supplier cannot explain which company actually makes the additive, that is a red flag. It costs nothing to ask. The supplier that avoids the question is usually hiding something else too.

So, oil additive to stop leaks: what is the honest answer?

Sam gave me a short version while I stood by the parts shelf. A stop-leak oil additive can soften or swell old seals. That is a temporary fix for a small weep from a seal. It is not a repair for a cracked housing, a loose fitting, or a damaged gasket. If the leak is coming from somewhere else, the additive will not solve it. It may only make the leak harder to find.

That is why Sam wanted the UV dye kit first. The point was not to avoid buying an oil additive to stop leaks. The point was to know whether an additive was even the right tool. If you are considering one of these products for your own equipment, ask the same question before you buy: what is the actual source of the leak?

What are additive colors? A detour through the dye kit

The UV leak-detection kit used a small bottle of fluorescent dye concentrate. I remember reading the instructions and thinking: what are additive colors? So I looked it up.

In design, additive colors are red, green, and blue light. Mix them and you get white light. In industrial purchasing, the term usually means something different: an additive color is a dye or colorant blended into a base product. Red dye in some fuel is an additive color. The fluorescent dye in a leak-detection kit is an additive color. It is added to oil so that you can see where the oil is going under UV light.

I am not a color scientist. I am a buyer who learned that the same word means different things in different industries. If you hear someone in maintenance say additive colors, they probably mean the dye, not the RGB color model.

The acetone SDS side quest: H225, H319, H336

The dye concentrate contained acetone. That surprised me because I think of acetone as a cleaner or solvent. It is also a common carrier in some concentrates. I wanted to know what the safety data sheet actually said, so I searched acetone sds h225 h319 h336.

The GHS hazard statements that appear for acetone are usually these:

  • H225 - Highly flammable liquid and vapor.
  • H319 - Causes serious eye irritation.
  • H336 - May cause drowsiness or dizziness.

I checked those against the SDS from our supplier and against PubChem's GHS summary for acetone (pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, accessed January 2025). If your supplier's SDS does not include the full text of those H-statements, ask for one that does. You need the code and the whole sentence, not a tiny font warning.

For a purchasing manager, H225 is the code that matters most. A highly flammable liquid can affect storage and shipping. It may add a hazmat fee, require a flammables cabinet, or change what you are allowed to keep in the building. Those costs do not appear on the first line of a vendor quote unless you ask.

The transparency lesson

The first vendor that quoted us the dye kit had the lower product price. The quote did not mention the acetone-related hazmat fee. When I called, the sales rep said: We add that at check out. That one sentence told me how the rest of the order would go.

I cancelled. The second vendor had a slightly higher quote, but it listed the hazard fee and shipping as separate line items, with the SDS attached. In the end, it cost us less because there were no surprises.

The vendor who lists all fees upfront, even if the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end.

What happened next? The dye kit did its job. Sam found a leaking fitting, not a bad seal. He replaced the fitting, and we never needed the stop-leak additive. If we had poured the additive in first, the fitting might have kept leaking and we would have blamed the wrong problem.

That is the lesson I keep retelling in our purchasing department: transparency is not a soft skill. It is the whole job. Read the SDS, ask what is not included, and verify who makes the product before you believe the label.

My experience is based on small industrial purchases. If you work in a lab or refinery, you probably have stricter rules already. If you are an office buyer like me, write this down: a product claim is only as good as the paperwork behind it.
