Innospec Fuel Additives: A Buyer’s Guide to SDS Sheets, Dosing, and Parallel Use

An admin buyer explains how to evaluate Innospec fuel additives by scenario: checking Innospec SDS sheets, using a fuel additive measuring bottle, and deciding whether to run the current additive in parallel with a second product.

I'm the office administrator for a 180-person equipment rental company. I manage all fuel and maintenance-chemical ordering—roughly $85,000 annually across 11 vendors—and I report to both operations and finance. I don't have a chemistry degree. I have a purchase order log going back to 2020, and honestly, that log has taught me more than any product brochure.

There is no universal “best fuel additive.” Not because marketers lie, but because the right chemistry depends on the fuel and the problem. The four situations are: gasoline equipment on ethanol-blended fuel; diesel equipment and generators that work in cold weather; facilities where safety documentation matters as much as the chemical itself; and shops that already treat fuel with one additive and are wondering whether a second additive can run at the same time. Each gets a different answer. I’ll walk through them in the order I use when an order request lands on my desk.

Scenario 1: Gasoline, Ethanol-Blended Fuel, and Corrosion

Ethanol in gasoline attracts water. That’s not a theory; it’s why pumps, float bowls, and storage tanks—especially equipment that sits for weeks—develop rust and varnish. If that’s your problem, the chemistry you need is corrosion inhibition, not an “octane boost.” The common mistake is to focus on cleaning power and miss the corrosion side entirely.

Innospec is one of the companies behind this kind of chemistry. The phrase “Innospec DCI-11 corrosion inhibitor ethanol” comes up often in purchasing searches, and it’s a good example of why labels confuse people. That type of product is usually dosed upstream—at a fuel terminal or blending rack—rather than sold as a universal bottle on a store shelf. Before you add anything, ask your fuel supplier whether your gasoline already has a corrosion inhibitor in it. If it does, an extra bottle in your shop may be duplicate coverage. If it doesn’t, look for an ethanol-compatible corrosion inhibitor or stabilizer.

One honest caveat: if the gasoline is already cloudy or has separated, no additive I know of will put that fuel back together. That’s the case where no purchase is the right purchase. It cost me an $1,800 tank cleaning to learn that lesson.

Scenario 2: Diesel Equipment and Generators in Cold Weather

Diesel is where our own purchasing history gets interesting. When I took over in 2021, whoever needed fuel treatment bought whatever was on sale at the auto parts store. That approach stopped working in February 2023, when a generator on a remote jobsite wouldn’t start at -13°F.

The problem wasn’t the brand of additive. The problem was that nobody could tell the supplier how much additive was actually in the tank. The technician had been pouring in “a little extra for winter” because he figured more is better. When the supplier asked whether we used the fuel additive measuring bottle or just a splash from a jug, the answer was uncomfortable.

Since then, I check three things before buying a diesel additive:

  • It has to address lubricity. Modern ULSD doesn’t carry the same natural lubricity as older, higher-sulfur diesel, and injection pumps depend on fuel for lubrication.
  • It has to have a cold-flow component if equipment sits outside in winter. I look for cloud point or CFPP improvement on the data sheet instead of trusting “winter diesel” claims.
  • It should handle water separation. Water is the real enemy in a 1,000-gallon storage tank.

Also, I now order a fuel additive measuring bottle with every drum. It sounds trivial. It isn’t. If the dosage says 1 liter of additive per 2,000 liters of fuel, that’s an exact fraction, not “a good splash.” The measuring bottle costs a few dollars. Since we added one to every order, our reorder frequency dropped noticeably—I don’t have hard data on total consumption, but the supply room tells the same story.

Scenario 3: You Need the Paper Trail—SDS Sheets and Compliance

Here’s the part that makes operations people roll their eyes but makes buyers and finance pay attention: the SDS is part of the deliverable. An Innospec product without the Innospec SDS sheets is, for me, an incomplete order.

I started comparing SDS documents side by side during our 2024 vendor review, and that’s when it clicked. One supplier gave us a complete 16-section sheet with the exact product name and current revision date. Another gave us a two-page placeholder that could have been for any “diesel treatment.” Documentation isn’t just paperwork. It tells you whether the manufacturer treats the product like a chemical or like a magic potion.

If you need the Innospec SDS sheets, don’t trust a random PDF from a third-party portal. Ask the supplier or manufacturer for the current version before you place the PO. SDS versions change, and an outdated document can fail an audit just as easily as a missing one.

Two regulatory checks matter here. In the U.S., fuel additives are supposed to be registered with the EPA under 40 CFR Part 79. And under OSHA/GHS, safety data sheets follow a 16-section format. If a supplier can’t confirm either of those things, I won’t put the product on a purchase order.

Scenario 4: Can You Run the Current Additive in Parallel with Another?

“Our current additive is already doing its job. Can we add a second one in the same tank at the same time?”

I hear this question more than you’d expect. Typed into a search engine, it looks like “is current additive in parallel”—meaning, if I keep the product I’m already using, can a second additive run alongside it? The honest answer is: it depends on what the first product already contains.

If your current additive is a complete multifunctional diesel package—lubricity improver, cetane improver, cold-flow improver, corrosion inhibitor, demulsifier—adding another complete package in parallel is redundant. At best, it’s wasted money. At worst, over-concentration can make fuel hazy or interfere with water separation. You won’t see a benefit because you’re not fixing a missing function; you’re doubling a formula that was already balanced.

Parallel use can make sense when the second product is a targeted single-function additive. For example, a biocide for stored fuel or an anti-gel for an extreme cold snap is designed to solve one specific problem. That kind of parallel dosing is legitimate.

Here’s how I check for overlap: I read Section 3 on both SDS sheets. Ethylene products—such as ethylene glycol ethers—often show up as carrier solvents in additive formulations. If both products use the same ethylene products as carriers and both claim the same main functions, you’re stacking duplicate chemistry, not complementary chemistry.

Honestly, I’m not sure why “more additive is better” is so persistent. My guess is that it comes from the old oil-change instinct: if a little maintenance is good, a lot must be better. Fuel additives are concentrated chemical packages. Adding more isn’t insurance. It’s an experiment, and experiments have budgets.

How to Figure Out Where You Are

Start with three questions.

First, what fuel are you treating? If it’s diesel in cold weather, go back to Scenario 2. If it’s gasoline with ethanol and long storage periods, Scenario 1 is your starting point.

Second, is an auditor, insurer, or safety manager asking for documentation? Then Scenario 3 comes first. No product story matters until the SDS and registration status are resolved.

Third, are you already dosing an additive and thinking about adding another? Read the label and SDS before you buy anything. If the current product is a complete package, the answer to “is current additive in parallel with a second one worth it” is usually no.

And if the fuel is already contaminated with water, solve that problem before purchasing any chemistry. That’s the situation where the most honest recommendation is to slow down and fix the tank.

I’m not going to tell you that Innospec is the right answer for all four scenarios. It isn’t. But in my experience, a supplier that sends the SDS first, confirms the dosage, and tells you when not to buy is the supplier worth keeping.
