If you're the one who ends up ordering specialty chemicals — not because you're a chemist, but because somebody has to handle the paperwork — this one's for you. I've managed purchasing for a manufacturing operation since 2020, and that means I've bought everything from office chairs to fuel additives for our fleet maintenance team. The questions below are the ones I get asked most, plus a couple I wish I'd asked before I learned the hard way. I've got a personal motto now: five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.
What exactly is Innospec?
Innospec is a specialty chemicals company — US-based, publicly traded on NASDAQ under the ticker IOSP. They make fuel additives, oil additives, corrosion inhibitors, and other performance chemicals for industrial customers. For context, that's how Innospec DCI-11 came up in our maintenance meetings: it's a corrosion inhibitor used in ethanol-blended fuels, and it's exactly the kind of thing a facilities buyer like me ends up sourcing without a chemistry degree.
Here's the thing though. "Publicly traded" means they're a real company with real audits. It doesn't tell you which product you actually need, or whether the distributor you're emailing is authorized to sell the real thing. I treat every order like a verification project: check the entity, check the product code, check the SDS. Five minutes upfront saves five days of cleanup later.
Why does "Innospec Performance Chemicals Italia S.r.l." matter for my order?
That's the Italian subsidiary — in Italian corporate law, "s.r.l." stands for società a responsabilità limitata, which is roughly the equivalent of an LLC or Ltd. And it matters more than you'd expect, especially if your company has operations on both sides of the Atlantic like ours does.
I nearly learned this the expensive way. Our Italian office needed a corrosion inhibitor for a production trial, and I almost placed the order through the US legal entity we already had in our vendor system. Sounds harmless, right? It isn't. Cross-border chemical orders under the EU chemical framework have different classification, labeling, and packaging requirements than US orders. The invoice, the VAT handling, the transport documentation — they all route through the regional entity. Getting the vendor setup reversed took our accounting team about three weeks. OSHA requires that safety data sheets be accessible to employees who work with hazardous chemicals, and honestly, the SDS also tells you practical things — storage requirements, handling precautions, compatibility issues — that you need to know before the product shows up, not after.
I still kick myself for skipping this on an early order. We were bringing in a corrosion inhibitor concentrate, and I assumed storage would be straightforward. It wasn't until the drum arrived that our safety officer flagged the SDS: the product had specific temperature and ventilation requirements we weren't set up for. Torque converter shudder is one of those annoying problems that feels bigger than it is — that vibration you feel when the torque converter locks up is often fixable with the right friction modifier. But "right" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
When our mechanics recommended a specific brand, I went hunting for a better price and found a cheaper alternative that looked nearly identical: same bottle style, similar description, comparable price per liter. I saved about $90 on a case. Then we found out it wasn't compatible with the OEM transmission fluid in our delivery trucks. We ended up flushing three transmissions — roughly $1,800 in fluid and labor, plus two days of trucks sitting in the yard.
Here's the buyer version of this lesson: check the OEM specification first, then verify the additive actually meets it. If the brand you're looking at doesn't publish a technical data sheet, that's a red flag. Per FTC advertising guidelines, performance claims have to be truthful and substantiated — but the most reliable test is whether the product is specifically listed for your application. Save money on shipping, not on specs.
How do I pick an oil cleaner additive?
Oil cleaner additives are designed to dissolve sludge and deposits inside an engine. They're one of those products where everybody has an opinion and nobody reads the label until something smokes.
First, match the cleaner to the engine type. Diesel and gasoline engines have completely different deposit profiles, and a product formulated for one can be a waste of money — or worse — on the other. Second, read the SDS. Not just to be compliant (though that matters), but because it tells you what's actually in the bottle. If the composition section lists generic "petroleum distillates" with no real detail, you're buying a commodity, not an engineered product.
I don't have hard data on how many oil cleaner purchases go wrong. What I can say anecdotally, from the maintenance tickets I've seen, is that the problems almost always trace back to a mismatch between the product and the engine spec — or a repackaged product that looked like the real deal in the listing. The fix isn't glamorous: buy from an authorized distributor, verify the product code against the manufacturer's website, and keep the SDS on file. Boring beats expensive every time.
What products have titanium dioxide in them? And why should I care?
Titanium dioxide is everywhere. It's the white pigment in paints and coatings, it's in plastics, paper, sunscreen, toothpaste, and even some foods (where it's listed as E171 in the EU). If your facility handles coatings or plastics in any form, TiO2 is likely already coming through your dock — you just haven't been looking for it.
That's also one of the tricky parts from a paperwork perspective. On an SDS, titanium dioxide sits in Section 3 (composition), but the way it's listed varies. Sometimes it's buried inside a proprietary blend with only a percentage range. I've opened SDS documents where "titanium dioxide" was the fourth item on a list of ten and easy to skip if you're just glance-checking.
There's a regulatory side to this too. The EU reclassified titanium dioxide as a suspected carcinogen (by inhalation) under the CLP Regulation back in 2021, with a transition period after that. Practically speaking, the SDS you get from Innospec's European entity may differ from the US version even for a similarly named product — different classifications mean different hazard statements on the label and different paperwork in the shipment. If you're managing supply across borders, checking the regional SDS isn't paranoia. It's the job.
