Innospec Additives FAQ: What I Learned About Color Systems, Electrolytes, and Zinc Dosage

A procurement engineer shares 7 FAQ-style lessons about ordering from Innospec—including the Italian subsidiary, additive color systems, electrolyte additives, and zinc in oil.

I’m a formulation engineer turned procurement lead. I’ve been placing orders with Innospec and other specialty chemical suppliers since 2016. I’ve made mistakes—some small, and one $4,800 order that ended up recycled because I specified the wrong viscosity. This FAQ is the list I wish someone had given me before I started.

1. What does Innospec actually make?

Let’s start with the basics. According to Innospec’s official website, it is a specialty chemicals company with a few key areas: fuel additives, corrosion inhibitors, performance chemicals, and active chemicals. The performance chemicals bucket is where you find things like oleochemicals, surfactants, and industrial specialties. Innospec Performance Chemicals Italia S.r.l. is a legal entity on that side.

I have ordered from the Italian entity maybe 12 times—or rather, 10 times, I would have to check the procurement portal. The product code matched, but the packaging did not look like what we got from the US office. That was fine, but it taught me a rule: don’t order by trade name alone. Match the product code, the CAS number, and the safety data sheet (SDS). A trade name is a nickname, not a specification.

2. How can I be sure I’m on the real Innospec official website?

Simple. The website should be https://www.innospec.com. For subsidiaries like Innospec Performance Chemicals Italia S.r.l., look under the Contact or Locations section. I once followed a Google result that had “innospec” in the domain but no official logo and no VAT number. It looked real. It wasn’t. They took my inquiry and routed it to a third-party vendor. Nothing was delivered, and I lost about a week and a half of production.

Since then, I check the email domain. Official Innospec communications come from @innospec.com. If someone claims to be the Italian subsidiary and their email is at gmail.com, that’s a red flag.

3. What is an additive color system?

Here’s where terms get confusing. On a screen, an additive color system is RGB—red, green, blue. In chemical additives, the same phrase usually describes a colorant system for marking or tinting a product. For example, a dye package can make one hydraulic fluid green and another brown so a line worker doesn’t mix them.

The system includes the color concentrate, a dosing pump, and a reference chart. I learned this after sending a “PMS 348” match request with RGB values from a design file. The lab produced a color that looked right in fluorescent light and wrong in daylight. That’s metamerism. Per Pantone’s guidelines, the tolerance for brand-critical colors is Delta E below 2; ours was around 4. The product got rejected.

Now I send a physical chip and write down the light source. I also ask whether the dye is compatible with the base fluid. A dye that works in diesel won’t necessarily dissolve in a water-glycol fluid.

4. What is the best electrolyte additive for water?

“Best” is a dangerous word. If you are using water electrolysis to make hydrogen, potassium hydroxide (KOH) is a common electrolyte because it has high ionic conductivity. Typical concentrations are around 10–30% by weight, depending on the cell design. If you are treating cooling water, the additive is not KOH—it’s a corrosion inhibitor and biocide package.

I mixed those two up in 2022. I wrote “electrolyte additive for water” on a requisition, and the procurement team ordered a cooling water treatment. It arrived as a clear liquid, we put it into a tank, and the conductivity didn’t move. Then we read the SDS. $3,200 of chemistry lesson. That’s been my experience in a small pilot electrolysis setup. If you’re dealing with a different cell design or a different metal, the calculus could be different.

My rule now: state the application, the target conductivity, and the metals in contact. If you just say “water,” you will get whatever “water” means to the seller—which might be completely different from what it means to you.

5. How much zinc additive should I add to oil?

Short answer: not until you know your baseline. Zinc in engine oil mostly comes from ZDDP, an antiwear additive that protects flat-tappet cams and lifters. For classic engines, a common target is 800–1,200 ppm zinc/phosphorus. Many modern oils already have 600–800 ppm. If you add a “one bottle treats five quarts” zinc additive without checking, you can easily overshoot.

I did this on a restored pickup in 2021. I added the full bottle, changed the oil, and waited. The check-engine light came on. The oil analysis showed 2,100 ppm zinc, and the catalytic converter started throwing efficiency codes. The converter didn’t die, but it was not happy. The fix cost more than a basic oil analysis.

I can only speak to engine oil formulations, not industrial gear oils. In my experience, the lab test comes first. If a supplier’s product sheet asks for your baseline and target—that’s a good sign. They’re treating it as a formula, not a lucky guess.

6. Why do serious suppliers avoid the word “best”?

Because “best” without a context is meaningless. Is the best electrolyte additive the one with the highest conductivity? KOH wins, but it attacks aluminum. Is the best zinc additive the one with the lowest treat rate? Maybe, if your base oil already has good oxidation stability.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), product claims must be truthful, non-deceptive, and substantiated.

When a supplier calls their product “best” without backing it up, they are either guessing or relying on your hopes. The supplier who says “this should take you from X to Y under Z conditions” is giving you real information.

I’ve also been on the receiving end of the flip side: a supplier saying “this isn’t our strength, here’s who does it better.” That sounds like they’re handing you a competitor. But it’s actually a signal that they respect the problem more than the sale.

7. When should I call a specialist instead of a chemical supplier?

When you’ve reached the edge of their expertise—or when they tell you to. I asked Innospec’s technical team about a fuel additive compatibility issue once, and they answered within a day. A few months later, I asked whether a specific colorant system would work in a polyurethane foam application. That was outside their product line. They referred me to a masterbatch specialist.

That referral saved me from a failed trial. Actually, it saved about four weeks—I had three color samples in hand within two weeks. I now keep a category in my notes for suppliers who tell me what not to buy from them.

Innospec is good at what they do. They don’t claim to be good at everything. That’s not a weakness; that’s credibility. The moment a supplier starts claiming they can solve every formulation problem, I start looking for the catch.

That’s the list. I keep adding to it, because every order is a chance to make a cheaper mistake than the last one.
