Choosing the Right Fuel Additive? It Depends on Your Scene (and Your Budget)

A procurement manager's breakdown of how to evaluate fuel additives for cost and performance, covering ethanol, carburetor cleaning, and safety data sheets. No universal answer, just the right fit for your scene.

There's no single "best" fuel additive. Not for your car, not for your equipment, and certainly not for your bottom line. The question, “What should I use?” depends entirely on what you’re trying to solve, and what you’re willing to spend. I’ve been managing procurement for specialty chemicals for a midsize fleet operation for the past 6 years. We spend about $180,000 annually on these products, and I’ve negotiated with over a dozen vendors. Based on that experience, here's a breakdown of the most common scenes I see, and what actually makes sense for each.

  3. The Safety & Compliance Scene: You need to source a specific chemical (like 93% sulfuric acid) for cleaning or a process, and the safety data sheet (SDS) is your primary concern.

Scene 1: The Ethanol Solvent Problem (and the "Is Ethanol a Solvent?" Question)

First, let’s answer the question: yes, ethanol is a solvent. It’s a very effective one, which is part of the problem. It can dissolve certain deposits and also absorb water from the atmosphere. When that water content gets too high, you get phase separation—a layer of water and ethanol at the bottom of your tank. This is corrosive and can ruin an engine.

For this scene, the chemical solution is a fuel additive that contains a water dispersant or a corrosion inhibitor.
